This led to the creation of ‘rookeries’ or tenements, structures built upwards, leaning against one another, with new floors and rooms added haphazardly as families grew. Much like the buildings in this set, these historical dwellings often featured narrow alleyways, overhanging upper floors that blocked out the sun, and a maze-like quality that made them difficult for outsiders to navigate.
