Historically, the carrack, or ‘nau’ in Portuguese, was a revolutionary sailing ship developed in the 15th century Atlantic Europe. It was the first true ocean-going vessel, a technological marvel that powered the great Age of Discovery. These ships were characterized by their deep, rounded hulls—a feature that gave them immense cargo capacity and stability in rough seas—and their distinctive high forecastles and even higher aftcastles. This design provided defensive platforms for soldiers and better accommodation for the captain and officers. Typically three- or four-masted, carracks combined the square sails of Northern European cogs with the lateen sails of the Mediterranean, allowing them to sail effectively against the wind and undertake long, arduous voyages across open oceans. They were the vessels that carried explorers like Christopher Columbus, whose flagship the *Santa María* was a carrack, and Vasco da Gama on their world-changing journeys. As the primary vehicle for long-distance trade, these ships connected continents, ferrying spices from the East Indies, gold from the Americas, and goods across the known world, laying the foundations for a global economy.
