Historically, the Knarr (or ‘knörr’ in Old Norse) was the workhorse of the Viking Age. While the sleek, fast longship is famous for its role in raiding and warfare, the Knarr was the backbone of Norse trade, exploration, and colonization. These ships were shorter, broader, and had a much deeper hull than longships, granting them a significantly larger cargo capacity. This design made them less swift but far more stable and seaworthy for long, perilous voyages across the open North Atlantic.
Constructed using the iconic clinker (lapstrake) technique, where the hull planks overlap and are riveted together, Knarrs were robust vessels capable of carrying up to 24 tons of cargo.
