Historically, the Ashigaru (literally ‘light-footed’) were the foot soldiers who formed the vast bulk of samurai armies from the 14th century onwards, rising to true prominence during the Sengoku Jidai (‘Warring States Period’) of the 15th and 16th centuries. Initially peasant levies with little training and poor equipment, their role was revolutionized by powerful daimyo like Oda Nobunaga. He recognized their potential and transformed them into a disciplined, professional fighting force.
The primary weapon of the Ashigaru was the ‘yari’ (spear), which could range from a modest length to massive pikes over five meters long. Organized into dense formations, these spearmen created a formidable ‘wall of spears’ that was devastatingly effective against both infantry and the once-dominant cavalry charges of the samurai. Their armor, typically an ‘okegawa-do’ (a hinged cuirass) and a ‘jingasa’ hat, offered practical protection without the expense and weight of a samurai’s full armor. The ‘sashimono’ flags worn on their backs were crucial for identification and unit cohesion in the chaos of battle, displaying the ‘mon’ (crest) of the lord they served. This Ashigaru Yari Set allows you to recreate these legendary formations and bring a crucial piece of Japanese military history to your tabletop.
